Another nabbed with 35 elephant tusks worth
over 451m/-
Police in Songea District have
arrested a man with at least 20 elephant tails estimated to value up to
USD300,000 (about 485m/-).
Ruvuma Regional Police Commander Akili Mpwapwa confirmed the report over the weekend saying police officers, working of a tip from the public, arrested the suspect, one Kiambwe Ndomondo (30) on April 21.
The resident of Masasi District in Mtwara Region was nabbed in possession of a black bag that contained the 20 elephant tails.
He was arrested at the Biasi area of Nakayaya Ward in Tunduru District on his way to Masasi and was then taken to Tunduru Police station where he is still being interrogated by the police.
This is the second large bust this month following the police in Mtwara arrest of Julius Abeid (32), a resident of Likula Village, Nanyumbu District in Mtwara Region who was found with 35 elephant tusks valued at 451,440,000/-.
Mtwara Regional Police Commander Zelothe Stephen told a news conference here that the suspect was arrested at his residence thanks to a tip off by the public.
Abeid is now being held at the Mtwara Regional police station awaiting legal action.
He commended wananchi for their support and corporation urging them to continue with the same spirit for the protection of the county’s wildlife resources.
Mtwara District game ranger Sikujua Mwakinga said: “If everyone was as patriotic as the villagers here are, poaching in this country would end once and for all.”
