A travel association statement angers Arusha tour operators

Tour operators are up in arms against African Tourism and Travel Association (ATTA) over the latter’s detrimental statement against the Karibu Travel Market show.

Early this month, ATTA published a statement on its website, notifying its members that its annual networking event in June has been cancelled due to uncertainty over this year’s Karibu Fair.

“ATTA Tanzania Network in June, over Karibu Fair, cancelled. There has been many confused messages and much uncertainty over Karibu Fair 2014. Shades of the muddle in 2012” ATTA statement reads in part.

ATTA went on saying that there has been a talk of the show moving to a new improved venue, with all sorts of improvements, but no confirmation has been received to date, for an event, which is a now only weeks away.

“Our members in Arusha have, as a result of these uncertainties, declined to support our evening,” ATTA remarked.

The statement, however, irritated Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) the organizer of Karibu travel market show, as its chairman, Willy Chambullo saying they need an apology over the damaging account.

“ATTA statement is very detrimental to Karibu Fair. We believe a red line has been crossed and we are consulting our lawyer to advise on the appropriate action,”  Chambullo explained.

TATO maintained that there was no any confusion over Karibu travel market show which slated for June 6th and 8th as clearly stipulated in a full page colour advertisement published on various print media.

“If there was any confusion surrounding the intent of Karibu Travel Market Tanzania 2014 it was nether created by Karibu Trade Fair Ltd nor TATO, and should not have been used as the reason for ATTA not to hold its usual event,” reads TATO statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Sirili Akko.

He added: “You are suggesting that lack of sponsorship of your event was the reason to pull out of your annual event created by TATO or Karibu because of your perceived confusion like 2012”.

Akko explained that ATTA announcement has caused its own confusion with a Kenya Tour Operator Chamelion, perhaps with others as the former had to call asking if at all the Karibu fair was cancelled.

“Chamelion called us to ask if Karibu 2014 was cancelled this year, with reference to the ATTA announcement, which they clearly misunderstood,” reads the statement.

In view of the information TATO, the owner of Karibu Trade Fair Ltd, expects an immediate retraction of the ATTA announcement made to its members and also immediate efforts to limit damage to the reputation of TATO and its Karibu Trade Fair ltd.
